Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a young girl the carnival barker father passed away and left her mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in school. She only attended the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. This was not an easy path to follow. While she was offered an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs came her way. In New York, she worked at a bar, as a check-in girl before quitting before moving to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working by working as an usher during the day while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. Drama studies led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
